My site has been invaded by these odd Chinese/Japanese spam messages. I
realise that I can do some limited work to prevent them from returning.

However, I have attempted to delete these but seem to have corrupted a
'table' somewhere and the function 'reply to this message' is now
inoperative, it simply hangs for 10 mins or so when selected.

I used a sample copy of the dicssion page so it is as basic as possible.

1) Can I rebuild, the 'index' of messages for this system so that it will
work again? If so, how (in simple terms PLEASE!)
2) Can I edit the 'index' of these messages to correct the 'pointer' that I
have corrupted.
3) Can I delete what's there and start afresh if that's my only choice. If
so, how?

Your deletions have corrupted the DW and the indexes can not be recreated
(unless your host has a backup they can restore)
You should only edit the posts you want deleted (as say - Post Deleted), and not deleting anything
Delete the corrupt DW subweb and Create a new one
