Corrupt Files : Removing/Deleting

James Cooksey

Second question of the day...

I have recently had a crash from unkown cause and one of my files has become
corrupt and unreadable and cannot be deleted or overwritten. Windows XP
error checker says it could not complete.

The error I receive when trying to delete is: "Cannot delete buddies.xml:
File or directory is corrupted and unreadable"

Is there any way of deleting this file as I need to replace it with a
backup? or is there a way of reparing the disk, thanks!

Try doing this in Safe Mode. Since you didn't quote any of the "first
question of the day", I have no idea what caused your computer to have
problems so can't be more specific. If you'd like more help (or the
Safe Mode trick doesn't do it), please repost with details about the
original problem and what you've done to troubleshoot.

James;

Run Error checking first! Reboot. Then try deleting the file.

Scandisk is now Error-checking (chkdisk).
Open My Computer, double-click the My Computer icon on the desktop.
Right click your hard drive | Properties.
On the Tools tab, under Error-checking, click Check Now.
Under Check disk options, check both boxes.
You have to *reboot* for Error-checking to run.

For a peek at the log.
Start | Run | Type: eventvwr | OK
