corrupt config problem

I received the following message upon starting my laptop this morning.
Windows is unable to start,

\windows\system32\config\sytem is corrupt or missing

I usually back up my work but there is about 40 hours of coding from the
past 4 days that is not backed up! The system recovery disk that came with my
Toshiba Satellite M70 laptop does not have a recovery mode. It only
reinstalls and wipes out the hard drive.

When I load the system recovery disk, there is no option to start the
recovery console.

I have already tried F8 when booting up. Starting in (i) safe mode or (ii)
last known good config, does not work and results in the same error message.

It seems to me that I cannot go out and purchase a new copy of windows since
microsoft reports that it may not work with OEM installed windows.

I dont mind reinstalling everything so long as I can recover the folder
(less than 2 megs since it only contains .cpp and .h files) of my work.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Ron

Try this:

1) Get a blank formatted floppy drive
2. Copy the Ntdetect.com and NTLDR files from the I386 folder on the XP
CD-ROM to this floppy disk (or from a XP system that is working from c:\
- unhide all hidden files first and enable file extensions to be
visible).
3. Rename the NTLDR file to Setupldr.bin if copied from CD-ROM.
4. Create a Boot.ini file in Notepad by copying the following:

[boot loader]
timeout=30
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP
Professional" /noexecute=optin /fastdetect

This should allow you to bootup the HD. You can then do the backups of
your data before trouble shooting.

Ron,

If you can't boot to Windows you can access your C: files by using a BartPE
CD. The A43 program on this CD is similar to Windows Explorer. You can then
copy your files to floppy or external HD.

Building the CD (on someone else's computer) only takes 10 to 15 minutes.

Thanks for your help. I didnt have a floppy but created a boot cd from your
instructions and was able to back up all the needed files to my external hard
drive.

Sheesh, I had gotten complacent with XP. from now on, nightly backups.

This is the only thing I have seen so far that might help me. If I purchase
this, can I put this directly into my CD drive and run it? I wasn't able to
boot from my original CD, and MS help requests that I know my PID number,
which means I must have access to my computer files, which I don't, so MS
help is out of the question. They don't make any provision for those that
can't access that number.
