copying .pst file to another computer

I have a ton of old emails that I'd like to sort through and purge when I'm
on vacation with my laptop. If I transfer my desktop outlook .pst file to
my laptop and then purge unwanted email stuff ----- will everything be fine
on my desktop when I copy and paste the .pst file back?? Or will shortcuts
and misc be changed?

You can copy the pst-file to your laptop but don't overwrite any existing
pst-files. Connect to it by File-> Open-> Outlook Data File...
You can then do the housekeeping that you want.

When you return, do the same thing on your Desktop to reconnect. Then in
your account settings, set the cleaned up pst-file as your default delivery
location. You can disconnect your old pst-file afterwards and delete it if
you want.
