Copying contacts and saved e-mail in Outlook

Is it possible to copy my contacts and saved e-mails from Outlook to disk? When I've tried in the past, it seems to copy the entire Outlook program into an .exe file, which I don't ever seem to be able to launch from the disk. Any advice?
 
click on contact then go to "file"----"import/export". Select export file then select export excel file. That should work.
