Technically? Yes.
Legally? No.

IANAL, but I do not believe there is a legal prohibition, per se, on copying
a DVD, which you own, to your PC harddrive.

There are lots of programs available, which copy DVDs, including mainstream
offerings from Pinnacle, Roxio and Nero, among others.

What you do to overcome the copy protections, if any, put in place by the
publisher of a commercial DVD, may put you into a grey area, I guess. Some
methods, like VirtualDrive, might be less problematic legally than
decrypters, like DVD43.

While I agree, the Supreme Court has ruled that any method of defeating DRM
or Copyright protection *is* illegal. While it is unlikely that the OP will
be arrested for copying a DVD he owns to his HDD, it is also worth noting
that doing so *is* a federal misdemeanor and is punishable by both fine and
prison time. No sense in candy coating it. While it can be done, it does
not negate the fact that merely copying a DVD your already own to your hard
drive is technically breaking federal regulations.

Technically, George W. Bush has committed war crimes. Try to arrest him, if
you are so concerned about the rule of law.
