Capturing Screens Using the Clipboard
You can take two different kinds of screen shots:
A picture of the whole screen by pressing PRINT SCREEN
A picture of the active window by pressing ALT-PRINT SCREEN

Hello TA.
I've tried that but nothing happens.
Where's the clipboard?
Cheers,
S

Steffo, you then paste the contents of the clipboard into your word processing program or
alternatively into paint.
Open Word after doing the capture and press CTRL+V or Open Paint and do the same.
Or use one of the 3rd party programs.

Thanks.
Now I can take a shot of the whole screen, but I'd like to take a shot of
only a part of it.
How do I do that?
TIA!

Paste it into Notepad and edit it.

Hi Frank.
It's not working in Notepad (no option to paste) but it's working in
Wordpad.
Thank you.

You'll have a hard time editing it in Wordpad. Paint works better.

I recommend that you use an extra program called "Hardcopy", because the
standard capture screen function which comes with Windows XP is not the best.

Go back a couple posts...where TaurArian said that Alt-Prnt Screen grabs
just the active window.

TaurArian,

Capturing the focused window:

Actually ALT + PRINTSCREEN is for Windows 2000
CTRL + PRINTSCREEN is for XP

Another MVP that isn't. You can't paste a printscreen clipboard to notepad,
you paste it to PAINT or a graphics program.

DUH!

Not in my XP pro it doesn't.

Printscreen = Desktop
Alt+Printscreen= Window with focus.

If you try "CTRL+Printscreen" you still get desktop.

In Windows XP it is ALT+PRINT SCREEN.

To copy the window or screen contents
* To make a copy of the active window, press ALT+PRINT SCREEN.
* To copy the entire screen as it appears on your monitor, press PRINT
SCREEN.

Note
To paste the image into a document, click the Edit menu in the document
window, and then click Paste.

To copy the window or screen contents
http://www.microsoft.com/resources/.../en-us/common_trans_wind_screen.mspx?mfr=true

This is the same article that is in Windows XP Help and Support.

Paste the following line into Start | Run and click OK..

hh common.chm::/common_trans_wind_screen.htm

Hope this helps. Let us know.

Notepad is not an image editor. It is a text editor.
I like Irfanview. You can paste screenshots into it, and select the
area to save, then clip.
