converting word 2003 to word 2007 problem

i have documents that were created in word 2003. when i go to open them now
in 2007 they come up in all symbols. can someone help me?

It sounds like the documents are damaged internally. Do you have an
installation of 2003 (or another version of Word) where you can try to open
them? If you do, and they open successfully, try saving them to XML file
format (if 2003) or HTML format (if 2002 or 2000) or RTF format (if 97). With
any luck, that will clean out the "gunk" so that Word 2007 can recognize them
correctly.
