Control userpasswords2

On a new XP Pro SP2 system, I created a single user with
a password and with "guests" disabled. (I've done this
on more machines than I can count.) However, following
my usual use of "control userpasswords2" to disable the
necessity for a logon, I still get prompted for a password
with I boot. Have I forgotten something?

I deleted the password and rebooted at which time I was
again presented with a logon prompt where I simply
pressed enter to proceed.

Any thoughts?

You may have gotten one of the ASP.NET Windows update installed. This creates
a special user account in XP. Download the Powertoys for XP TweakUI and check
in the "Login" section. Remove the check marks from the account you do not
want to see on the Welcome screen.

I didn't see anything under the "Login" section that suggested anything
out of the ordinary. I'm still scratching my head trying to figure out what
might be going on here.

Is there a password assigned to the account? If not assign one, then
"control userpasswords2" should work to set auto logon.

There is indeed a password and one is not forced to
enter it at logon time. However, the user icon continues
to appear at startup and the user has to click on the icon
in order to proceed. Also, there is a diagnostic that appears
prior to the logon user icon complaining about not being
able to find the password for the Administrator. There is
only one user on the offending machine and that user has
administrator authority. The "Guest" account is disabled.

Hmm..this is just a guess then. Try resetting the built in Administrator
account password. Also create another user account. Will it work then if
you set that user account for auto logon?

I will try that the next time I'm at the site.... might be a
day or so before I get back there.

I finally had the chance to create a "new account", set a
password for that account and direct auto-logon for that
new account via the control userpasswords2 interface.
So far so good. I re-booted the machine and everything
works as expected. Once I'm convinced that I'm "out of
the woods" on this caper, I'll delete the un-needed accounts.

Thanks for the suggestions,
Bill
