Continuous activity on my LAN slowing down system.

HI I have installed XP prof. I encounter a few problems.
First, there is continuous data flow & LAN activity
status window shows non stop transfer of data, sometimes
flowing in or flowing out, whereas no browser window is
open. Second, Task Manager under Processes shows above
90% CPU usage while system Idle Process is also above
90%. A few files like svchost.exe, taskmgr.exe
&explorer.exe seem to have surges of activity jumping
from less than 10% to above 80% without any apparent
reason. Even if I end that activity the CPU usage remains
at a high. Is my system haunted??? Please let me know
what to do!

Did you ever find out what causes this? I'm getting the
same thing.
