Constant Virus Popup window

I'm not sure if this is an XP issue or an issue with AVG antivirus but
I'll post here and hope someone can somehow help.

I use XP Home Edition + SP1 and all updates required.

When my computer sits idle I will get the following message after a few
minutes:

"AVG Resident Shield

Virus
Virus Identified I-Worm/Gibe.B

is found in file
C:\System Volume Information\_restore(xxx-xxx-xxx-xxx)\RP36\A0003913.exe

To remove this virus, please run AVG for Windows"

Now I've run scans using both AVG & PC-Cillin and neither has detected a
virus. The popup will continue every 20-30 minutes. I have shut down AVG
from the system tray and the message still returns.

I've even searched my hard drives for the file "A0003913.exe"
but it is not found.

I'm unsure of what to do next. I was thinking of uninstalling AVG or
maybe even re-installing windows from scratch [not something I really
want to do].

Anyone have any help on this? Am I posting in the right ng? If not could
someone kindly point me to the correct ng?

TIA!

alt.comp.anti-virus would do too, but you're OK here. Basically the
virus is trapped in your restore points, and no threat unless you
restore it (you must have been infected with Gibe.b, the fake MS
security patch, at some time). Either just ignore it, until it falls off
the end of your restore points, or go into 'disk cleanup' (disk,
properties, tools, disk cleanup) and dump all restore points except the
most recent.

Re-installing is =NOT= required. It is =hardly ever= the best solution
to a simple problem, although help desks love it because it gets you off
their neck for several hours (and yes, it will fix a lot of problems ..
but a full body transplant will fix most health problems too).

Hi Patrick,

It's a virus in the System Restore folder. It is harmless provided you do
not use that restore point. However, if you want to be rid of it, use one of
these methods to remove old restore points.

1) Run cleanmgr.exe, it can remove all but the newest restore point. After
starting it, click on the "more options" tab to clean up the restore points.

2) Control Panel/system/SR tab, disable SR on all drives, reboot, then
reenable it. This removes *all* existing restore points.

3) Control Panel/system/SR tab/settings, reduce the size allotted to SRR.
This will remove the older restore points and retain the newer ones.

I would uninstall AVG to start and at least see what happens. A lot easier
than reinstalling.

THAT has to be the stupidest advice I have ever seen posted here. The OP has
a virus in his System Restore the ONLY way to get rid of it is to disable
and then re-enable System restore.

I solved the problem by using the advice given here. I no longer get the
virus warning message.

How did I do it?
I ran cleanmgr.exe, and removed all but the newest restore point.

Thanks to all who helped.!!
