USB data is deleted whenever I plug the USB in. Need help please.

I'm using Windows XP Professional. Recently, whenever I plug in my USB, all
the data inside is deleted.

It started happening when AVG Anti-Virus Free found a virus inside my USB
and deleted it. After that, whenever an USB is plugged in, all its data is
gone. I've tried uninstalling AVG but the problem still occurs. After that, I
changed to Avast! Free Edition and scanned the computer and USB, but no virus
found.

I've noticed that it only deletes files, not folders (the folder is still
there, but all the files inside are deleted), and after deleting a file named
"recycle.dat" (or something similar, can't quite remember, but I'm sure it
had the word "recycle", just can't remember the extension) appears.

I'm looking forward to answers. Any help is appreciated.

You probably still have a virus and it's the virus that does the damage. I
would use a better virus scanner.

That is the weirdest damn thing I ever heard!

Try this: Put a thousand files on the drive, fire up Task Manager (or
similar) and plug in the drive.

What program is working like a crazed beaver deleting files? Unplug the
drive while this maniac deletion is in progress. Who is waiting or retrying?

Please report back what you find.

You seem to be describing a constant virus infection. Run additional
virus scans and consider formating it.

Besides the fine suggestions already made, here's what I would try..
Right-click the device in "My Computer", click Properties. Click the
AutoPlay tab and click the "Restore Defaults" button. That might change
an action inserted by malware, if one exists..

Here is some detailed advice you can use.

Download, install, update and do a full scan with these free malware
detection programs:

Malwarebytes (MBAM): http://malwarebytes.org/
SUPERAntiSpyware: (SAS): http://www.superantispyware.com/

They can be uninstalled later if desired.

If you are suspicious in any way about your USB device, reformat it.
Then you will not have any questions about the health of your USB
device.

Check the manufacturers WWW site to see if there is a method they
prefer for formatting or have their own software. Many do.

If not, format the USB device using the built in XP formatting
software.

Thank you all for your help. I've used malwarebytes' anti malware and scanned
my computer. It found a virus and deleted it. Now my computer's back to
normal.

No, it isn't - the OP's report was false. Check his new post on the same
subject.

The report was amazing at the time.

I was being a little sarcastic and expected to hear from the OP again.

I should have said:

That is amazing.

See you soon.
