Console Messages No Longer Supported?

My system is running XP pro sp2 and is on a LAN with a Win ME system. I am
trying to send a console message but the OS fails to recognize the name of
the other computer.

If I use the SEARCH function the other computer is found, however, and
sending files back and forth works fine.

I tried using the NET SEND command and got the message "The message alias
could not be found on the network. Eventually from the help function on the
command line I got the message that this function is no longer supported.

Does anyone know if the console message function is supposed to work?

Not by default, but you can enable the service again. Please
have a look at http://www.michna.com/kb/WxSP2.htm for details.
