I was doing some scans with Defender a few minutes ago and after I etnt to
restart the computer froze on the shutdown process. upon powering it down
manualy and powering it back up I got the consistency check screen. when it
ran through the check this is what it found and recovered.

Operating system is windows xp on Service pack 3

Checking file system on C:
The type of the file system is NTFS.

One of your disks needs to be checked for consistency. You
may cancel the disk check, but it is strongly recommended
that you continue.

Does the computer still boot? Have you backed up all your data files to
removable media? What is your hard drive make and model?

yes the computer will boot fine the hard drive is a segate and this is the
second one that has been put in this machine. consistency checks are not a
new thing to this computer and never have been as it did the same thing with
the other drive that it does with this one... I have had it in the shop
different times and have had others look at it and from what they can tell
everything runs fine. this is the first time I have gotten a consistency
error that is like this though..

Run the drive manufacturers test utility:
http://www.seagate.com/www/en-us/support/downloads/seatools

You say your drive is a Seagate. What model?

Try HD Tune only gives information and does not fix any
problems.

Download and run it and see what it turns up. You want HD Tune
(freeware) version 2.55 not HD Tune Pro (not Freeware) version 3.00.
http://www.hdtune.com/

Select the Info tabs and place the cursor on the drive under Drive
letter and then double click the two page icon ( copy to Clipboard )
and copy into a further message.

Select the Health tab and then double click the two page icon ( copy to
Clipboard ) and copy into a further message. Make sure you do a full
surface scan with HD Tune.

G

Gerry

Rage

It appears in the box in the top left of the window on the Info tab in
HD Tune like so:
MAXTOR STM3160815AS

If you have more than one drive use the scroll bar to the right to
select other drives.

Rage Skywolfe

the results from seagate have turned out alright so far except for the
S.M.A.R.T check which was in fail.the short drive was alright. and don't
remember if I tested the short generic or not will have to look back in the
log. but here are the results
from HD Tune. also if you can let me know what you mean by full surface scan
I can get that information to you as well. thanks.
