The problem is :

- on a Windows XP Professional with SP2 system appears at specific moments
when copying files the event id 55 error:

"The file system structure on the disk is corrupt and unusable. Please run
the chkdsk utility on the volume \Device\HarddiskVolume..."

This corruption appears only on files with long names or with special
characters _ - ~ in the name of the file.

Chkdsk is running after the restarting of that workstation and is giving me
the same output as in KB885871(correcting minor problems in in dex $I30...
Bellow i have few errors on that system

Corrupt NTFS...but why?
If I copy 5-6 hours files with normal file names is OK ..in the moment when
I copy files with special characters in the file name _ - ~ the error appears.
I saw on google multiple problems with the same error ( index minor
inconsistencies) and most of them on AMD systems ( VIA 686B southbridge) like
my system.
SP2 has a new IDE driver for VIA chipset systems..

Do you have two hard drives on the primary IDE channel? Master/slave or
computer select for both drives, with the jumpers set correctly?
Does the problem apear on the C: partition too, on disk 0 or only on the F:
and H: partitions on the second HD ie.. disk 1?
Did you use XP Pro's disk management to partition and format the drive(s)?

Ok, your C: & Your D: drive/partitions are not affected on the Seagate, right?
You might try setting up the Maxtor as the primary "slave" for disk 0/IDE 0,
so that both are on the primary IDE channel.. The Sony should be setup as
"master" on the secondary IDE channel disk 1/IDE 1 leaving room for another
optical device ie..DVD player etc..

It was the first time ..maxtor was on the ide0 and the problem was still the

I think that my problem has something to do with the two articles from above.
Most of the crashes ( but not all) happens on the partitions on the IDE1 -

Remains the solution with Segate and Maxtor on ide0 and CDROM SONY alone on
ide1.

"CC", SP2 should have been the solution in both cases and should have
resolved your dilemma, perhaps both drives together on IDE0 will function
properly now that SP2 is installed and updated.
I hope so..

I see in this reply that you failed to mention the UDMA for the primary IDE
channel IDE0? My UDMA for both of my HD's is 5 for IDE0, in device manager,
Primary IDE channel, properties, advanced settings tab.. My old Sony CD-RW
drive came with a burning app B's clip and B's Recorder Gold 5 and even after
updating my advanced settings tab was not showing up at all. This affected
both IDE channels and only after uninstalling the B's apps did the advanced
tab return. This may not be relevant to your situation, just a thought..

I have
Segate 120 GB 8 MB buffer primary master on ide0 15 gb (c:) operating system
partition and 100 GB second partition
Maxtor 80 GB 2 MB buffer on ide1 - secondary master (38 and 38 GB 2
partitions) and CDROM SONY CDU 5221 secondary slave ( set on UDMA 2) .
Jumpers are OK and i have formatted the disks with Disk Management.

The files are form CISCO documentation - for CCNA /CCNP e-learning and have
diffrent filenames.

:

Obviously, the files with 'special' characters are upsetting the drive.. why
do the files have special characters?..

Corrupt NTFS...but why?
If I copy 5-6 hours files with normal file names is OK ..in the moment
when
I copy files with special characters in the file name _ - ~ the error
appears.
I saw on google multiple problems with the same error ( index minor
inconsistencies) and most of them on AMD systems ( VIA 686B southbridge)
like
my system.
SP2 has a new IDE driver for VIA chipset systems..

Corrupt NTFS..

The problem is :

- on a Windows XP Professional with SP2 system appears at specific
moments
when copying files the event id 55 error:

"The file system structure on the disk is corrupt and unusable. Please
run
the chkdsk utility on the volume \Device\HarddiskVolume..."

This corruption appears only on files with long names or with special
characters _ - ~ in the name of the file.

Chkdsk is running after the restarting of that workstation and is
giving
me
the same output as in KB885871(correcting minor problems in in dex
