defrag & chkdsk (warning long append)

Iam trying to run defrag. When I do I get a message to
that defrag can not be run do to errors and ro run a
chkdsk,

When I run chkdsk I get the following messages from the
utility.

Checking file system on C:
The type of the file system is NTFS.

A disk check has been scheduled.
Windows will now check the disk.
The record length 0x9e539e52 of attribute of type
0x9e519e50 and
instance tag 0x9e57 in file 0x590f is not aligned.
Truncating badly linked attribute records
from file record segment 22799.
Unable to locate the file name attribute of index entry
file0000.chk
of index $I30 with parent 0x55c7 in file 0x590f.
Deleting index entry file0000.chk in index $I30 of file
21959.
Cleaning up minor inconsistencies on the drive.
CHKDSK is recovering lost files.
Cleaning up 92 unused index entries from index $SII of
file 0x9.
Cleaning up 92 unused index entries from index $SDH of
file 0x9.
Cleaning up 92 unused security descriptors.
Inserting data attribute into file 22799.

I then try to rerun defrag but recieve the same error
message to run chkdsk. From the chkdsk messages i assume
something is not being corrected . Can I do anything to
resolve the problem????

p.s. over half my hard drice is free space......

BUT have you partitioned XP into a smaller than suitable
partition when you created the OS in the first place?
Your disk may have loads of free space but a partition
may be blocking the OS from doing its 'business'...

As far a I can see all I have is 1 partition which
contains my entire "C" drive. There are no other
partitions.
