The problem is :

- on a Windows XP Professional with SP2 system appears the event id 55 error:

"The file system structure on the disk is corrupt and unusable. Please run
the chkdsk utility on the volume \Device\HarddiskVolume..."

This corruption appears only on files with long names or with special
characters _ - ~ in the name of the file.

Chkdsk is running after the restarting of that workstation and is giving me
the same output as in KB885871(correcting minor problems in in dex $I30...
Bellow i have few errors on that system

Thank you in advance,

Have you considered the possibility that this may not be a bug
but a corrupted file system that cannot be repaired by chkdsk?
If this was my machine then I would do this:
- Download and run thye disk diagnostic program that most
disk manufacturers make available free of charge on their
home site.
- Temporarily install the problem disk as a slave disk in some
other WinXP/2000 PC, then copy the whole system drive
(including hidden files) to a spare disk. The target disk would
thus receive a true copy of the source disk but without the file
system problems.

Not that you would need to make the target disk bootable,
using the Recovery Console.

Constant file corruption often is caused by a failing hard drive or bad
RAM. Test both, starting with the hard drive:

1) Test the hard drive with a diagnostic utility from the mftr. Download
the file and make a bootable floppy or cd with it. Boot with the media
and do a thorough test. If the drive has physical errors, replace it.

2) Test the RAM - I like Memtest86+ from www.memtest.org. Obviously, you
have to get the program from a working machine. You will either
download the precompiled Windows binary to make a bootable floppy or
the .iso to make a bootable cd. If you want to use the latter, you'll
need to have third-party burning software on the machine where you
download the file - XP's built-in burning capability won't do the job.
In either case, boot with the media you made. The test will run
immediately. Let the test run for an hour or two - unless errors are
seen immediately. If you get any errors, replace the RAM.

I have:
- checked the cables and replace them with other
-checked the disks with utilities form Maxtor and Segate- error free (on the
disk)
-checked the RAM 4-5 hours with memtest and DOCMEM.
-the disks on another system are fine
-the corruption is only on files with strange file names ( CISCO
documentation... with special characters in the file name).
- I have formatted the disks 3 times .

I saw on google multiple problems with the same error: and most of them on
AMD systems (with VIA 686 B Southbridge) like my system.

Corrupt NTFS...but why?
If I copy 5-6 hours files with normal file names is OK ..in the moment when
I copy files with special characters in the file name _ - ~ the error appears.
I saw on google multiple problems with the same error ( index minor
inconsistencies) and most of them on AMD systems ( VIA 686B southbridge) like
my system.
SP2 has a new IDE driver for VIA chipset systems..

If i suspected the hardware or the IDE driver then i would
temporarily install the problem disk as a slave disk in some
non-AMD system and attempt to copy the problem
files/folders in order to isolate the problem.

Nothing 'special' about those character's. They are all valid characters
for use in a filename.

I have
Segate 120 GB 8 MB buffer primary master on ide0 15 gb (c:) operating system
partition and 100 GB second partition
Maxtor 80 GB 2 MB buffer on ide1 - secondary master (38 and 38 GB 2
partitions) and CDROM SONY CDU 5221 secondary slave ( set on UDMA 2) .
Jumpers are OK and i have formatted the disks with Disk Management.
The disks are verified and are OK with powermax and sea tools.
The files are verified on other machines (I have copied on another systems)
and the system was OK until SP2.
