Connection Timed Out

I'm having problems accessing the logon screen to an
application on the internet. I can reach the portal but
when I click logon, I get error connection timed out error
10060. I can access other sites and am running Win 2000
and IE 6 with all service packs. I have previously been
able to log onto the application with this computer but I
have since reinstalled everything and now cannot access
it. Can anyone give me some clues as to the settings that
might affect a user accessing an application running Java?

Thanks.

First, if you're using Microsoft's JRE, get rid of it! Go to
http://java.sun.com/ and download/install the latest version of their JRE
for Windows (I believe it's J2RE 1.4.2b2). It is MUCH more stable and
versatile than MS' version. It also comes directly from Sun Microsystems
(which is where MS gets theirs before they mutilate it). If it's only Java
apps you're having a problem with, this should fix it.

Hi

Sorry, got it wrong, the application is running Java
Script and it's client side Java Script. Does this make a
difference to your answer?

Thanks.

Yes, it does, but no worries.

MS Internet Explorer (along with every other major web browser) comes
with what's called a "Java virtual machine." This is the interpreter that
allows you to run javascripts in web pages. Many methods invoked by a
JavaScript can be prevented from running if you have your security settings
too high. Open your Internet Options control panel, and go to the Security
section. Make sure you have the slider set no higher than "Medium." Next
go to the Privacy section. Here, make sure the slider is set no higher than
"Medium-High." These are the highest security settings allowed in IE while
still allowing JavaScript to be fully functional. Also make sure that you
are allowing the acceptance of cookies from the site you're trying to
access. Most sites that require a login store that login information on
your HDD in the form of a cookie (this makes things MUCH easier on the
server's end of the connection).

Let me know if this helps. :)[/QUOTE]
