Connection Sharing Help

Steve

Hi - Hope somebody can help.

My setup is as follows

1 x ADSL Router (acting as DHCP Server & router 192.168.0.1/255.255.255.0)
1 x Wireless AP hard wired to the router (192.168.0.50/255.255.255.0)
1 x Fileserver containing 2 network cards 1 wireless to connect to the
AP/Internet (through the router) and a wired network card connecting to the
PC below.
1 x PC with 1 wired network card connected to file server.

DHCP is enabled on ALL TCP/IP Settings, however only the Filserver can
connect to the internet and only the wireless network card is obtaining its
IP via DHCP. The wired network card in both PC's are being assined an
"Automatic Provate Address". I've tried bridgeing the 2 cards in the file
server but all that does is prevent the fileserver from seeing the net.

I HAVE SHARED THE WIRELESS CONNECTION AS ADVISED IN A PREVIOUS POST AND
CHANGED THE SUBNET TO THE ABOVE.

Your Help would be appreciated - Many Thanks

Steve

Why are you using a direct connection from your fileserver to the last
pc on your list? I believe this is causing your problem. You should
have:

1) all pc's using an ethernet connection going directly to your router
or to a switch connected to the router if you don't have enough ports
on the router.

2) the wap connected to the router as you have it.

3) all pc's using the wireless connection such as laptops not connected
to the router or switch by ethernet. All pc's in same workgroup, of
course.

4) I'm assuming you are not using a server os and/or domain on the
fileserver.

5) You can assign a static ip to the fileserver and let everything else
get ip addresses via dhcp from the router.

6) All boxen to have the same network and submask settings; i.e.,
192.168.0.1/255.255.255.0. The gateway in all cases is the router;
i.e., 192.168.0.1. And you're quite sure that 192.168.0.1 is the
correct address per the router's manual? Linksys routers use
192.168.1.1; Belkins use 192.168.2.1. Other brands use other
permutations of 192.168.x.1. Make sure the wap network settings match
the router settings.

7) Make sure Windows Internet Connection Sharing is off.

8. You don't want to use a bridge.

The only reason you would have something like a bridge is if you were
trying to connect two separate networks, and there is no reason to do
this in a home or simple network, and I don't think that's what you
want anyway.
