I will have to connect a laptop to a domain. This Laptop is running XP
Pro and has been a standalone PC for some time. If I connect it to a
domain all the personal settings of the user are lost and a new set are
created.
How can I connect to a domain but retain the current deskyop apps etc.

Hi Chris,

You can just copy the old user profile to the new one. Just open the folder
C:\Document and Settings\OldProfile and copy its folders (Desktop,
Favorites, etc.) to the newly created profile. Take a look at the following
article for more details:

How to copy data from a corrupted user profile to a new profile

Thanks Anton.
Should have thought of that.

While I'm on the point. A second question.

I Join Domain 1 on Monday to Wednesday then on Thurday and friday am at
another employer and join Domain 2 .

Each time I join a domain the old settings are lost etc. Is there a
way of retaining these settings so as I jump domains its less of a
pain???

(this can get worse as I relieve at a few places but have to supply my
own notebook. so some time its domain 3 4 & 5....)

At the moment I either put up with it or use standards shares...

Hi Chris,

You can try setting a home folder for all the profiles. Create a profile of
your choice and copy it somewhere else on your computer. Log on with one of
the profiles and follow these steps:

1. Start / Run, type regedit

2. Open the key:
HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\User Shell Folders

3. Change the path of the folder to the one you create and copied on your
disk

4. Log off and repeat these steps for all profiles that you are planning to
use

Unfortunately I did not test this so I hope it helps.

Here are a couple of thoughts, untested of course...

1) Have a separate userid for each customer.

2) Perform a Windows XP System Restore, create a checkpoint respective
