conflict with dvd/cd and norton is driving me mad

Hi,
Before I go insane, can anyone help?

After installing Norton Anti Virus (several times and various editions) it
stops my dvd/cd player from working. If I uninstall it, everything works ok.

ok; I've checked my device manager and everything is listed as working ok;
the computer reads the dvd drive ok; I've tried swiching in advanced settings
to PIO etc but still nothing. I've turned off windows firewall.

System is XP pro and I'm running with the sp2. Had no problems until I took
Norton off and then reinstalled. This is not a new dvd/cd that I've put in
but an existing one that's been working great until now and still does if I
remove Norton.

Any help before I find the nearest tree,

Thanks,

Rick
