This is the most perplexing problem and I could really use some expert
advice. My brother uninstalled Norton Systemworks Premier 2005 on his
computer. After he did this, both the CD-RW and DVD drives no longer work.
In Device Manager there is a yellow exclamation point which says "Windows
successfully loaded the device driver for this hardware but cannot find the
hardware device. (Code 41)" next to both devices.
I have tried everything I know how. I've uninstalled and reinstalled the
drivers, I've swapped them as master and slave (and changed the jumpers).
I've swapped IDE channels. I even tried a PCI drive controller and taken
them off the mainboard. I also tried using System Restore however none of
the restore points work (probably because too much was changed when
SystemWorks was uninstalled).
I would be happy to reinstall XP but I can't even do that because there's no
working CD reader. There used to be a system file checker in Win 98 but that
doesn't seem to exist in XP. I am completely stumped.
Any help from someone very experienced would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks.
