Conflict between Plug and play and IE 6

Internet Explorer would not open - all we got was the
hourglass. Through trial and error we were able to get IE
to open by using the system configuration utility
(start>run>msconfig) - "Services" tab to disable "plug
and play". We subsequently proved that EI will not open
with PnP enabled but it will with PnP disabled. The
problem is that with PnP disabled, we get no audio. In
fact the system is not aware it has a sound card. We are
left with a choice of using internet explorer or having
audio. If anyone can help I would appreciate it. Thanks
in advance.

If your Operating system is Windows 2000 disabling PnP will stop the operating system from booting. I would not do that and reboot the system. You'll never get back in.

I don't know why disabling PnP would interfere with IE. Likely it is a PnP device that is causing this.

Sorry - forgot to mention the operating system is XP.
