Thanks everyone. See notes below for background information.

I've gathered that U3 is not Vista compatible (generally speaking) and that
I should disable the motherboard PNP through BIOS. Only problem with that
solution is that I cannot access any devices on my computer (like DVD's, USB
ports, etc). With the service disabled as it is now, the only thing the
computer is good for is internet access. Everything else hangs or stalls for
10-30 seconds before opening. As it is now, my data is on the local disk and
I have no way of retrieving it since with the PNP service diabled, nothing is
accessible.

Can I repair/reinstall this service without destroying everything else in
the process?

U3 is not compatible with Vista. The whole concept is software driven, and
there are no plans by SanDisk to make it Vista compatible.

I just formatted my SanDisk Micro and use it as a "normal" USB drive. It is
detected and works fine with the drivers provided by Vista.

U3 is compatible with Vista, generally. It's just that SanDisk's U3
installer is not stated to be Vista compatible as some of the batch numbers
of certain models have not been made compatible yet, and may never be.

My SanDisk Cruzer Titanium's batch number is within this range of
incompatible units, but according to my correspondence with them, the latest
installer actually does work for most people using Vista.

My one works fine as a non-U3 flash drive, but there is an error shown in
one of its entries in Device Manager.

It doesn't matter if plug and play is enabled in the bios because Vista
bypasses the bios and does plug and play by itself. The option in the bios
is for computers with Win98. To re-enable the service in Vista press
windows key+R, type services.msc, select plug and play service and right
click, select properties, set service to auto, click start the service or
reboot the computer, your choice. Plug and Play will now work.
