Configuring WEP

I configured a WEP key on my router. My 2 computers running WinXP
(pre-SP1 plus all updates that don't have SP1 as a pre-req) have no
problem connecting. But the computer that is running all the latest
updates (SP1 + the rollup fixes, plus all other critical updates,
etc), cannot connect. It doesn't seem to be accepting the key (13
character ASCII).
What can the problem be?

Peter

Try using a hex key. ASCII keys can be buggy, especially
with 128-bit, which it sounds like you're using from the
13 character key (as opposed to 5 for 64-bit).

Hope this helps,

Nick

Please install SP1 and all the subsequent fixes on your XP computers.
There is no reason to not bring your computers up to date and get the
security protection in these fixes. That said, most routers have the
ability to use a 26 character 128 bit HEX key and you should try that
and the same on the computers.

Isn't 13 Ascii characters the same as 26 Hex? I don't think that's
the problem because 2 of the systems have no problem connecting. It's
only my one system running Win XP SP1 that is having a problem. Is
there some new bug that was introduced? Is there some other screen I
need to go to? With SP1, you can't tell it whether the key is Hex or
Ascii or how long it is. I assume it figures it out. With pre-SP1,
there was a drop-down box for both of these so you can be more
explicit. Am I missing something?

Peter

Well, I don't want to do that just yet until I figure out why SP1 has
a problem connection to my network. The pre-SP1 systems have no such
problems.

unmark 802.1x authentication in advanced on the SP1 machine.
upgrade your other systems to SP1 for more assistance.

I have tried checking and unchecking the 802.1x authentication.
Neither seems to fix the problem. I am *only* having a problem with
the SP1 machine, so the other ones don't really enter into this,
except to show that the network works.

Me too!

Thought I was the only one having this problem.

Interested to know how you got on.

Paul.
