Configuring Outlook 2003 for both Exchange and POP3

Hi,

Is there a way to configure Outlook to automatically use Exchange to deliver
Exchange tasks, such Task Assignment or sending/responding to meeting
requests? I have both POP3 and exchange accounts, and Outlook seems to get
confused as to which one to use when.

FYI, we have a small, 5 user network, consisting of a Windows 2003 domain,
Exchange 2003 and XP clients. All clients are running office 2003 Pro. We
use Exchange for internal use and the POP3 accounts for outside
communications.

Thanks,

You need to have the exchange mailbox as the default and select the pop when
you send outside.

Why don't you have the exchange server handling outside mail too?

Hi Diane,

I didn't setup the Exchange, but I believe it wasn't configured for outside
usage, mainly for reasons of security and reliability.

Now, suppose that I configure my Exchange as an SMTP server. Will I just
point to the Exchange as Outgoing mail server, even for my POP3 accounts?
And what will the destination user see as the source email address (POP3
address or Exchange address)?

Thanks much,

If you configure Exchange to send mail out, you can add the addresses used
by the POP3 accounts to the Exchange accounts as the default SMTP address,
so no one on the outside will know the difference. You can leave everything
else alone for now - no need to change anything in Outlook, other than
setting the Exchange account and the Exchange mailbox as defaults.

If your ISP has port 25 blocked, you can configure Exchange to use their
SMTP as a smart host and forward mail to it.
