Configuring Fax Service on Gateway 450 Laptop

Sideshow Bob

I can't seem to get anywhere with Gateway tech support with this problem so
I thought I'd try here. I have a Gateway 450 Laptop running Windows XP
Professional w/ SP1. I want to set up the fax service so I can send faxes
from Word. I have gone to the Add/Remove Windows Components area in Control
Panel, checked the Fax Services box, and installed from the CD. After it
finishes there is no "Fax" icon in the Printers and Faxes folder, and no
shortcuts in the Programs\Accessories\Communications\Fax folder on the start
menu. If I go directly through Windows Explorer to Windows\System32 the
needed files seem to be there but if I click on fxclnt.exe (Fax Console), it
tells me "No Fax Printer Installed". Click on fxssend.exe and an error
prompt pops up with "To send a fax you must have a fax printer installed".
The Configuration Wizard in Console does not start. What should I try next?
Thanks in advance.

It's listed as a GTW V.92 Voicemodem. I should add that as a test I hooked
up an external Compaq USB Fax/Modem and attempted another Fax Services
install. No difference.

Check to make sure it is on the Windows XP HCL list.
See if your faxsetup.log provides any clues.

Have you installed a fax printer? When in Word,
for example, and you select print, does the fax service
show as an installed printer?

No. That's just it, there is no "Fax" icon in the Printers and Faxes folder
despite repeated attempts at installing.

A sticker right below the keyboard says "Designed for Microsoft Windows XP".
The modem is integrated into the motherboard.

That sticker means nothing as far as your modem is concerned. Check the HCL
list on Microsoft's site.

Okay, I did. It's listed as Broadcom Corporation GTW V.92 Voicemodem Release
3.3.24 [MDC] compatible with Windows 2000. In the driver property sheet,
file version is 3.3.24 01/30/2002. Digital signer is Microsoft Windows
Hardware Compatibility.

Yes, we are. Anyway, I've finally figured it out. It turns out I didn't have
permission. I went into Administrative Tools\Local Security Policy\Local
Policies\User Rights Assignment and gave myself permission to install
programs. Rebooted, went to setup faxing in the Printers and Faxes folder
and it installed just like it's supposed to. I now have a "Fax" icon in the
folder. Thanks for the assist.
