I used my computer normally this morning. when I went back to the computer a
funny message said that configsys was missing and computer won't start up
because of it. I put the CD in, but restarting doesn't help because the
computer won't recognize it. How do I get things restored?

You don't !

CONFIG.SYS is NOT interpreted by WinXP (or any other NT based OS) at best it will be parsed
for 'set' commands.

The question I have is it CONFIG.SYS or CONFIGSYS ?

This is the message I get (I am working from my DH's computer now) is this:
Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt:
\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SYSTEM

The suggestion is to restart using the original CD and choose "r" for
repair, but I am not able to get that far! Because of the above problem,
booting from the CD didn't work - I went into BIOS and changed the set-up so
it boots from the CD, but it won't do that, again, because of the above
problem, which it states as to why it won't boot up. This is frustrating.

OK -- There is a *BIG* differeence between this error message and your original post !

Search the News Group. While I don't know the answer, this has been asked and answered
*many* times.

That is a registry hive and it is corrupted. Search Help & Support for
"corrupted registry".
Someone else will doubtless tell you more.

When the pc is booting up ,Tap F8 Function key to get bootup options. Tap & keep repeat tapping F8 !

When presented with bootup choices, select Last Known Good Configuration.
Now try getting into Windows. Does that work?

Okay - will do that - exactly what do I do a search for so I don't waste a
lot of time searching using the wrong verbage? I already goofed up on my
original question, so I don't want to goof up again. I appreciate your help!

Last known configuration does not work; alreay tried that. Went to the
Microsoft help for corrupted registry, but the steps indicate that you will
have a recovery screen, and that is not coming up for me, so that won't work.
I will try the other link, as nothing seems to be working at this point.

Well, I tried the other link, but it tells you to use "run" and I can't get
that far. Can't get to command prompt even, so not sure what to do now. Any
ideas?

\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SYSTEM
This was the message I received. I checked out that link, but that solution
won't work - I can't get to the recovery console. If I can't get to the
recovery console, none of those "helps" do anything. Getting frustrated here.

I should mention that I can't get to system restore, either. I am getting
nowhere, very quickly.

Does the system at least boot from the original install CD? This will
take you thorugh the" loading drivers" screen and then to the menu
giving a choice of install, repair etc. If it recognizes the CD but
goes no further then you have a hardware problem. If the install CD
does load properly but then you get to the error message, your hard
drive is trashed. The next step is to take that hard drive out, put
it in another computer, scan for viruses, and see what's actually on
the drive.

If you can't get to the Recovery Console when booting from the
installation CD, you'll need to address the underlying hardware
failure(s) before you can go further. What, exactly, started this chain
of events? The answer may well help determine which hardware component
failed.

To answer Bruce, I do not know what happened to start this sequence. I was on
the computer in the a.m. and it worked just fine. I left it running while I
stepped out. When I got back this message was on the screen. That is all I
know. To answer Steve, no it won't boot from the original install CD. I no
longer have any floppies to boot from, so don't have that option. I went into
bios and changed the boot to boot from CD for the first choice, but booting
from the CD just gives me the same message. I still don't have a working
solution.
