I crashed during aol, and now when i start up the comp,
it goes to check disk, says it cannot do it, then freezes
on the blue screen. I cannot start in safe mode, or last
known good configuration, et al. Please advise how to
solve problem without losing everything i had on Computer.

If no one has a better idea than mine or if nothing works,
try this as a last option.
Use your hard drive as a slave to another computer. If it
can be recognized you'd be able to copy files that you
want to keep from your hard drive. Change jumper settings
on your hard drive to 'cable select' or 'slave'.
