Try Last Known Good Configuration?
A description of the Safe Mode Boot options in Windows XP

What is the Dell model?

Do you have important data on the drive you need to recover?

Background information on Stop Error message
http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms793935.aspx

0x00000024: NTFS_FILE_SYSTEM
A problem occurred within NTFS.SYS, the driver file that allows the
system to read and write to NTFS file system drives. There may be a
physical problem with the disk, or an Interrupt Request Packet (IRP) may
be corrupted. Other common causes include heavy hard drive
fragmentation, heavy file I/O, problems with some types of
drive-mirroring software, or some antivirus software. I suggest running
ChkDsk or ScanDisk as a first step; then disable all file system filters
such as virus scanners, firewall software, or backup utilities. Check
the file properties of NTFS.SYS to ensure it matches the current OS or
SP version. Update all disk, tape backup, CD-ROM, or removable device
drivers to the most current versions.

Is the Dell a laptop or desktop? With the model number I can locate the
Manual?

How old is the computer?

The normal to run chkdsk would be from the Recovery Console but you
cannot use that method with a Dell.

its a desktop, sorry but i am not where the computer is right now, it is 3
years old, is it possible to just somehow format and then install xp? if so,
how do i do this with no comand promt or way to tell it to formatt? i have
been looking on the how to format windows at the microsoft site & there is a
download for xp set up disks so do u think if i downloaded thease, and then
loaded them into the sick machine, that i might either be able to just format
& go from there?

Did you buy the computer new or seconds hand?

Some Dell computers have a hidden partition containing a backup copy of
the operating system and some rely on recovery disks. That is why I am
asking about the model. When you try to boot you may see a reference to
Emergency Recovery. If you see this then by pressing the relevant key
during the boot it allows you to restore the operating system to factory
settings. This wipes everything from the drive,. i.e. programmes and
data, but gives you a working computer.

i bought it from the phone company, they had a special on them, so i thought
it was a brand new one at the time, i tried to call and ask them if there
was a recouvery cd or? but they said no & couldn't do anything, the warrenty
is only good for 1 year. i know what u mean by emergency recovery, but that
don't happen.
so i suppose the ? now is do i just throw it out or is there another option?

You certainly don't need to throw out the computer. Worst case you
might have to buy a copy of Windows XP.

Do you have the product key on a sticker on the computer (probably on
the back)? If so, find a friend with the same model Dell and ask the
friend to make a copy of the restoration CD for you (that's a
legitimate copy, since you own a license to use Windows XP as proven
by the Product Key sticker). You'll enter your key when prompted to do
so.

Yes, assuming that you buy a *retail* Windows XP CD or a generic OEM
one. Probably not, if you buy a brand name OEM CD, which will very
likely be BIOS-locked to that particular maker's computers of a
particular model number.

And note that your product key will only work with an OEM CD, and must
also match with respect to whether it's XP Professional or XP Home.

if i put it in the cd drive and boot up

Yes, you have to set the BIOS to boot from the CD first, not the hard
drive.

would it just load the new winxp?or do i have to format first?

No, don't format first. Just tell it, when asked, to do a clean
installation from scratch, and it will do the formatting as its first
step.

If you buy a CD, I recommend the retail upgrade version, not an OEM
one. Read the following to find out why:

The single biggest disadvantage of an OEM copy is that its license
ties it permanently to the first computer it's installed on. It can
never be moved to another, not even if the original one dies.

For that reason, I think OEM copies of Windows XP are very poor value,
and I always recommend the retail upgrade, which usually costs only
slightly more, instead. And despite what some people think, an upgrade
copy *can* do a clean installation as long as you own a CD of a
previous qualifying version to show it as proof of ownership when
prompted. Most people have a Windows 98 CD around, but worst case, if
you don't, you can buy one inexpensively someplace like eBay.
