XP unstable after installing SP2

P

Peter

After installing SP2 my machine has become unstable
especially at start up when it repeatedly restarts during
bootup, or freezes during bootup and I have to press the
reset button. Sometimes I get the option to start in Safe
Mode etc., and if I choose Last Known Good Configuration,
it still freezes. When Windows eventually starts loading
I get the dreaded blue screen (disk check) and if I'm
lucky Windows then starts up. After a successful start
up, the machine may crash and automatically restart
after, say, clicking on something and the whole rigmarole
begins all over again.
Any helpful suggestions will be very welcome.

If it doesn’t help, remove SP2 and see

Good Luck!
