Computer won't start up, windows not found.

My father-in-law gave me their computers and since we have had it, nothing
but problems. When we shut down and restarted instead of Windows booting up
we got through to the Packard Bell screen where the BIOS options are. Error
messages says that system couldnot connect or find windows. I decided to do
a system restore and cleared the computer of unnecessary junk and set it back
to factory settings. I then install my camera picture package and on restart
everything seemed ok but the next time the SAME error message came up and I
have to restore again. This has now happened again and I haven't a clue what
to do!

We received internet connection yesterday and I was able to log on and
install McAfee Security to run a check but it didn't seem to flag up any
viruses (could I check this any other way)but the computer is running
EXTREMELY slowly. Then this morning the computer couldn't find my wireless
connection and the package has just "disappeared" and lots of error messages
came up saying windows not responding and the screen kept freezing until I
had to do a forced shutdown.

If anyone can help me regarding any of this PLEASE HELP

Many Thanks
Wendy

How could it be a virus if you restored the system?

It's more likely a problem with the hard drive. But you might try the
help pages for your model HP.. Start here.

Make sure your HDD is okay by running a diagnostic test on it by
downloading the tools from the HP site for your HDD specs!.
Also if you confident enough open the case (Cover) and make sure the
Connectors firmly fitted/connected in their slots from/To motherboard to HDD
including power cables.
Be warned don't poke around for long or touch Chips or the Motherboard for
long as the ESD (Electro static Discharge can fry the Mobo rendering your
System Useless!.

Have a look in the Event Viewer for error messages(X) that can shed some
light and post it back in your next post by performing the following and also
the System File Checker (SFC) sfc /scannow:

Open a Notepad, customize or minimize to the taskbar as you will need it
later for this step to copy the error message on it.
Open a run command and type in:
eventvwr.msc click [OK] you will get the Event viewer control Panel.
click on each of these:
Application
System
Security
Look in the right Pane/window for error message with red (X) or Yellow
exclamation mark /!\ , double click each one to get more info about the
causer.
On the Event error properties message you will see:
Up Arrow
Down arrow
Two pages
Click on the two pages to copy the error message then bring up the Notepad
you opened earlier and right click on the first line and select Paste from
the list, this will paste the error message on a Notepad.
Please don't duplicate the error message one of each kind will be sufficient.
HOW TO: View and Manage Event Logs in Event Viewer in Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/308427/en-us

Please we need just the error messages with Red (X) and don't repeat the
error, just one of each kind and post them back in your next post.

Hard drive?

Try running HD Tune(freeware).

Download and run it and see what it turns up.
http://www.hdtune.com/

Select the Info tabs and place the cursor on the drive under Drive
letter and then double click the two page icon ( copy to Clipboard )
and copy into a further message.

Select the Health tab and then double click the two page icon ( copy
to Clipboard ) and copy into a further message. Also do a full surface
scan with HD Tune.

Error messages?

Please post copies of all Error and Warning Reports appearing in
the System and Application logs in Event Viewer for the last boot. No
Information Reports or Duplicates please. Indicate which also appear in
a previous boot.

You can access Event Viewer by selecting Start, Control Panel,
Administrative Tools, and Event Viewer. When researching the meaning
of the error, information regarding Event ID, Source and Description
are important.

HOW TO: View and Manage Event Logs in Event Viewer in Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/308427/en-us

Part of the Description of the error will include a link, which you
should double click for further information. You can copy using copy
and paste. Often the link will, however, say there is no further
information.
http://go.microsoft.com/fw.link/events.asp
(Please note the hyperlink above is for illustration purposes only)

A tip for posting copies of Error Reports! Run Event Viewer and double
click on the error you want to copy. In the window, which appears is a
button resembling two pages. Click the button and close Event
Viewer. Now start your message (email) and do a paste into the body of
the message. Make sure this is the first paste after exiting from
Event Viewer.

Just another guy!

Hope this helps.
