computer won't shut off

confused at home

i run windows xp and downloaded some upgrades last night
after they downloaded and installed the computer shutdown
and restarted on it's own but now it won't shut down
either way. please help if you can
 
You might want to try unplugging the computer and then plugging it back in.
That usually works if my system won't shut down.

i did unplug it and it went off but when i turned it back
on it still won't shut off. it did fine until we
downloaded those files then it just started not shutting
down
 
That's very odd. You downloaded the upgrades from the Microsoft website,
right?
 
Have you tried shutting down using the command line option?
click start, then run and type shutdown -s -f
see if that works!
