COMPUTER WON'T SHUT DOWN

My computer won't shut down. When I hit the turnoff or reatsrt it goes to
the proper window and hangs there forever never shutting down. Any help in
figuring this out would be appreciated. THANKS !

When i type in:

regedit--look HKEY_CURRENT_USER \Control Panel\Desktop

I get a message "we cannot find regedit--look

Am I typing it right? Thanks
