Computer turns on when phone rings

I bought a new computer a few days back with Windows XP.
When I am ready to close my computer (shut down), I go to
Start and then click to turn off. It shuts down as it
should. However, every time my home phone rings (computer
has phone line in and line out connected to that number),
the computer starts. Any idea as to why this happens or is
there anything I can do to avoid turning on the computer
with phone bell?

seems like your computer goes to standby instead of turning itself off. try
to check your bios and see if you can turn off an option which wakes your
computer.

is your modem built on to the mobo?

Either in BIOS or in Device Manager, the modem is configured to "wake up"
your computer. Thus, check your BIOS APM configuration and the modem
properties in Device Manager.

It doesn't matter if it's built in or not. Your PC is ALWAYS on. This is
why you have to check the bios to turn off "wake on modem" etc or
similiar lingo.
