this problem has been occuring in my computer ever since a couple of months
ago and its still around even though i've reformatted my computer. everytime
i unplug a usb device from my computer (ie. psp, thumb drive, mp3 player)
without using the "safely remove hardware" option in my system tray, the
computer stops responding after a few seconds. i am using winxp home with
sp2. any help would be appreciated. thanks in advance!

Go to Start/Run, and type DEVMGMT.MSC , highlight the USB Root Hub device(s),
Action menu, "Uninstall", then restart Windows, to find the device drivers
again automatically.

i've did what you suggested and unfortunately the problem hasnt gone away.
the computer still stops responding when i unplug usb devices from it without
using the 'safely remove hardware' option. if it helps, im currently using 4
out of the 8 available usb ports on my computer (1 mouse 1 keyboard 1
wireless adapter 1 printer).

Another common problem, especially with a lot of USB use at once, is power.
You may need to install a Hub with it's own power to accomodate all your
devices at once.
Sometimes the USB device has a Power tab, with a list of power requirements,
and available power.
start/run, type:
devmgmt.msc
Highlight USB device, Properties, Power tab.
