Computer starts by itself

My computer starts by itself at the same time each day by itself after it has
been shut down .
This is very annoying as I am often away for several days and it does not
turn off.
I have checked all programs that have auto functions but no tasks are set
for the time this auto start occurs. how can I stop this happening?

You will need to check in the BIOS to see what events the PC is set to
wake up on, e.g. wake on LAN, wake on key press etc. each BIOS uses
slightly different terminology. To get into the BIOS you normally press
F1 or Delete when the computer is booting. You may well find that you
want to turn most of these events off.

Mine is set to 'wake on keypress' which is OK except when I pick the
keyboard up and accidentally hit a key which makes me jump. A child or
pet touching a key would have the same effect.

Wake on LAN sounds harmless but if you have a couple of PC's networked
or permanently connected to the Internet then they send check signals
now and then which will wake the PC up.

If all else fails you may need to call en exorcist :)

Pull the plug out when you go away. I would never go away for a day or 2
and leave the computer plugged in.

It is I, the evil Dr. No, who starts your computer. And you are powerless to
stop me!

Actually, that's not true. You do have the power to stop me. Here's how:

1. Enter your BIOS and disable the 'wake on LAN' function. Without getting
too technical, wake on LAN is a method for network administrators to 'wake
up' a computer on the network in order to perform maintenance procedures.
Your computer may be responding to harmless network traffic from your ISP.
Or maybe it's not so harmless, so...

2. Scan your computer for viruses and spyware. Be 100% certain that your
computer is not infected. The evil Dr. No may have planted a program on your
computer which sends out spam (or worse) every night!

3. Just because you push the power button, you think your computer is
powered off? The evil Dr. No thinks "maybe not!" That's why Dr. No does not
want you to go to Control Panel > Power Options > Advanced tab to find out
what really happens "When I press the power button on my computer."

That will wake up the PC on pressing a key.
ps2kb resume from s3-----Any key

Is that resume from SB i.e. standby? If so probably should leave it on.
ps2 mouse reume from s3---enabled

Again if that's SB it means you can awake the computer by
moving/clicking the mouse.
usb resume from s3----enabled

If you have USB devices, especially a USB modem, that may be the
culprit.
vga-------------on
lpt & com-----------lpt/com

Wakeup on pme----------enabled

This is a 'Power Management Event', I would turn that off.
resume by alarm--------------on

That is interesting, it suggests the PC will awake at a fixed time. You
don't appear to have a time set so it might interpret that as midday or
midnight. I would turn that off.
date of month----0
resume time-----0:0:0
Irp activity monitor on or all enabled.

Try changing the ones I have flagged above and see if it helps, they
won't cause any harm. Doesn't look like there's a 'wake on LAN' which
is a common culprit.

Let us know how it goes, it may take 24 hours for you to be sure.

Your BIOS is configured to turn on your computer at midnight everyday.
So turn off the alarm function.

Review the manual for your motherboard, or download one from their web
site. The alarm function is used to turn on the computer at the
specified time (and date). Below is the description from my mobo's
manual:

Wakeup by Alarm
Two options are available: Disable or Enabled. The default setting is
Disabled. When set to Enabled, you can set the date and time at the the
RTC (real-time clock) alarm awakens the system from Suspend mode.

Much thanks to all especially Jeff Vanguard and Ted.
Usb devices are IR keyboard and mouse printer and scanner and a coulpe of
others I plug in when needed.
The modem is adsl and on board.
Also have a 56K voice data fax moden on board which I have disabled.
My security is grunty and I also use the mx firewall and microsoft anti
spyware which I find as good as any on the market. I am confident the comp
is as clean as I occasionally get my son to scan with his IT companies
system as a check.
You are right about the time that the thing fires up (midnight) so I will
take your advice and disable the "resume By PME" as it is a desktop not a lap
top and see no reason it should be on .
I will also Turn off the "resume by alarm as the time seems to fit with your
comments.
I will let you know if it works tomorrow after midnight.
Here is hoping
cheers

you may have Wake up on ring (or something) set - so if a phone call comes
through the computer (connected to the phone line) wakes up. Some people
may have this set if they have fax software etc. or if your computer is in
hibernate or sleep mode it may be residual network activity causing it to
wake or signals from your ISP or the dsl connection.....etc.

If you're away, then you can have it shut off again in Advanced Power
Management - say three minutes after it boots, put it into sleep mode or
schedule the shut-down sequence,

Yep that solved it.
It was the resume by alarm thing in the bios turning it off solved the
problem
thanks once again folks.
