Computer shuts down when clicked on EXE

Hi, I have been using my laptop with Windows XP Home Edi. Version 2002,
Service Pack 1 seamlessly since last one year. Recently, the computer started
shutting off without any forewarning. In last 3 days the frequency has gone
up considerably and since yesterday it shuts down every 2 minutes. I have
tried to use the OEM recovery disk and though it stopped shutting down that
often, it shuts down every time I click on any EXE file. Any window utility
or simple utilities such as winzip will shut down my laptop. PLEASE HELP!!!!

Start->run->shutdown -i
1. in it add computer name..........
2. change timing to 9999 from 20 seconds.....
3. put any comment nd ok
there u go and download all.

Hi Karan,

Thanks a bunch for your detailed response. I tried to change the timing from
20 seconds to 9999 seconds but the OK link is not activated and I can't seem
to change it. It also appears to be the 'Warning Message' display timing. In
my case, the warning message is never displayed, the computer just turns off
(not logs off or shuts down). The computer runs fine as long as I don't do
anything on it but the moment I try to click on any EXE file, it turns off.
Also, I forgot to mention that the screen has started flickering, though not
too much, you can see the flickering all across the screen. Is there any
compatibility problems developed with the hardware, software?

Sorry follow following steps to enable tag OK.

Start->Run->shutdown -i
1. Add computer name
2. update delay time to 9999 from 20 seconds
3. give any comment
4. ok
and rest all steps same

Hi Malke,

No, I haven't checked the laptop for viruses. Currently I have Norton
Anti-virus and it's updated daily and also scans the computer every day. I
also have MS Antispyware and all these shows that my laptop is clean. Should
I still check the link you gave for 'Malwares'?

Hi......
Your Windows Needs to be updated to XPservice pack2. You can download it
from www.microsoft.com, www.symantec.com
If u dont update your computer to service pack 2 it will keep on shutting
down after every 2 minutes, though you can delay the time to shut down
automatically but for permanent solution you need to update it to SP2.
If u want to download it from your own computer you can do following steps
to prevent your computer to shutdown...
start->run->shutdown -i
there u will find a check box saying display time 20 seconds ...increase
display timing for 20 to 99999.
and connect to internet and download the SP2.

This worked!!!!!

I followed your instructions and have worked on 3 exe files and nothing
happened. I mean, the laptop didn't shut down. Now, I will go ahead and
download all the required service packs..

tried to reboot thrice and it reached the welcome screen and closed down.
It's not 'Shut Down', it's just turns off. I have tried to download Service
Pack 2 but before I could download it, it closed down.

The screen is flickering too. What I did is, I went to Compaq's website and
tried to diagonise the problem and when they ran the video compatibility
check, the screen didn't flicker. It flickers during all other times.

Can anybody help me? The laptop is crashing like the lights in a club.

It can also shut down if your battery is weak. Make sure it is plugged
into the wall power and verify that the "charge" light on your laptop
turns "on" to indicate that your charger is working, connected, and the
battery is charging.

It will also shut down if it overheats. When you turn it on, listen
and make sure you can hear the fan blowing. Usually when you first
turn on a laptop the fan will come on for a few seconds then turn off
until it starts to get warm (you may need a new fan). The fan should
periodically turn on as you use it. Make sure the ventilation openings
are not blocked. Running programs (.exe) will heat the computer up
faster and could be the cause of your shutdown. See if it runs longer
if you refrigerate it a bit before turning on.

issue.

OK - just had to cover the bases. If it works OK in safe mode then it
seems to point to a program that is being run as part of the normal
boot which is not run when in safe mode. What you need to do is get a
program such as "msconfig" or "AutoRuns" (from sysinternals)
<http://www.sysinternals.com/Utilities/Autoruns.html>
or StartupCPL (standalone)
<http://www.mlin.net/StartupCPL.shtml>
then run it in safe mode, turning off virtually everything that runs on
a normal boot. Reboot your machine normally and hopefully it will come
up OK. Then re-run the program re-enabling a few programs at a time
(followed by a reboot) until the problem resurfaces.

It's a pain but it will probably reveal what is causing your problem.
