Computer Lag

My XP Home SP2 with most reccent updates is lagging. It won't release any
programs that I close, and it just hangs there. If I open a program a
process shows up in the task manager, but it never appears on windows, and if
I try to close it, it won't go away. Doctor Watson will tell me to send the
error report, but the program never closes.

Any suggestions?

The First Question Of Troubleshooting: what changed between the time
things worked and the time they didn't?

The Second Question of Windows Troubleshooting: what is the
malware/virus status of the machine? If you think it is clean, what
programs (and versions) did you use to determine this? Be sure:

In your case, I'd answer the Second Question first.

Well, to begin with, I have scanned the computer with Norton Antivirus 2005,
and the pc came up clean. Besides, any scan that I run on my PC for malware,
or viruses will always turn out clean because the programs that I use, or get
from persons on this forum do no work at all. Besides, the malware, or
viruses are released from (let's say a person in contact wiht the company) so
to make us users buy their software. And I only installed an recent update.
Also, I used O&O Defrag Professional ver 8 to defragment the pc, and
consolidate free space.

And only this happens out of the blue, on random user accounts. I haven't
detected a pattern at all.

What? This makes no sense. The programs that Malke and others here suggest
for malware removal are free, and they do work. Did you run through all the
malware removal steps Malke posted for you? I'm not saying you have a
malware problem but you need to eliminate that as an issue, and you won't
just by running a scan with NAV 2005.

Just to add to Rock's excellent comment, if the OP doesn't want to go
through the often-tedious methodical troubleshooting that is necessary,
he can always take the machine to a professional computer repair shop.
In his case, that would probably be the best course of action.

In that case, I can always FIX my computer myself, without the need to go
and pay $80-$150 US dollars to some repair shop for just a simple OS
installation and drivers. And that was what I had to do the last time around
5 weeks from today because I had a virus on my pc. And someone did gave me
the same instructions Malke gave me to check up for malware/viruses and how
to remove them. That is WHY I said they don't work because in my case, they
didn't. It had to do with the virus/malware preventing me to gain access to
the internet, and something to do with a stupid site that sells their
"Software" to remove such malware/virus.

Let's just declare that my pc is clean. Also, I heard of this problem
before with XP computers, about they not releasing any processes after the
program closes. It is like 3.1 behavior, if I am not mistaken because the
last time I used Windows 3.1, it opened the programs, but when I went to task
manager, they where still there, and if I tried to close them, they wouldn't
go away. Unless that PC had another problem.

Use another computer that is not infected to get to the internet and
download the programs you need. Sorry but you really don't understand what
you are doing. The malware removal instructions provided were clear. The
problems you're having with Windows XP and viruses shows it's the operator
and not the OS.

You can declare whatever you want but your pc is not clean. Since you don't
have a clue how to protect yourself from crapware, maybe you should just go
ahead and schedule a rebuild every week to clear the viruses and malware off
your system. You were given the best advice available from an expert and
you are unable or unwilling to follow it. So make sure you have backups of
your OS and drivers disks because they will be getting a lot of use.

Perhaps you read my post wrong Rock. I said I had to do a clean OS
installation 5 weeks ago because my pc was infected. I got some advice back
then, I ran all those scans they gave me, and I couldn't get rid of the
virus. I don't have the virus problem with not letting me to get to the
internet. And, yes, it is my bad to choose not to scan my pc for 'crapware'
because I choose not to. Besides, I can always reinstall my pc from scratch,
and build up to the point where it is done.

Also, I forgot to mention that I have two OS on my pc. XP Home, and XP Pro.
Last week, I did a backup of the two hard drives with XP Pro. But my main
concern is that if I restore from XP Pro, I am not sure if XP Home will work
fine. Or probably the backup done on XP Pro affected XP Home at the point
where I get such problems.

Well, rac, if you want to bring me in into backup schedules once a week,
what program do you recomend to do such thing? I could configure XP Pro, or
better, I can go XP Pro from now on and use their backup feature.
Nonetheless, what would you recomend rac?

Also, I can't play any games. Like heavy graphics games, and even a ms-dos
game from 1998. They just quit, or hang the pc up. I have the most recent
updates on my video card, even switching to older ones do not fix the problem.

I recommend that you follow Malke's advice and learn how to clean the crap
off of your pc.
I never said to backup once a week, I said rebuild once a week.
Until you 'choose' to deal with malware, the only time your pc will work
well is after a rebuild during that nanosecond between the time you go
online and the time the first piece of crap downloads.

Well, thank you for your posts. I will just re-install the OS and I am not
sure if it really was malware/viruses, or software related. But I bet it
really is software related. Besides, I will never know because I don't want
to run, or scan my pc with all those scans, or instructions because they will
take as much time as I can just re-install the OS, and programs. Thank you
for your time, and it is really unfurtunate that I couldn't get to the bottom
of this problem. Thank you and declare this post closed.
