Computer is slow now

I installed System Mechanic Professional to get rid of viruses and spyware.
After I installed it though, my computer started running at about 5 % speed.
I got rid of the viruses and spyware and everything and then uninstalled the
program but my computer is still 100 times slower than it was before - even
with the spyware. I tried system restore but that didn't work, and the
computer wont turn off unless i hold down the power button, i don't know what
the problem is.

possibility: your copy of system mechanic has been compromising your PC.

start up in safe mode. that is, immediately after the bios post, hold down
the F8 key and wait.
choose safe mode when you are prompted
login as administrator
click start and then run, type in msconfig.exe
click OK

the System configuration Utility should pop up. if not, try run in dos
prompt the following
%windir%\system32\dllcache\msconfig.exe
failing the above try
%windir%\health\hepctr\binaries\msconfig.exe

after the System configuration Utility pops up
click on Diagnostic startup, apply, OK
reboot.

once you start up into regular mode, login and check if the PC back to
normal speed.
if so, great. if Not, you still can try to Symantec and other reputable
virus vendor ( MacAfee, ) for online scanning and cleaning

you can also download the bona fide spybot search and destroy to clean up

in addition to the other suggestions
here are some points that
i would take a closer review of:

a) you might want to launch
recovery console from the
win cd and run a chkdsk
from the c prompt.

b) can boot into safemode
quicker. you can access
this mode via f8 at the
windows bootup menu.

c) do you have enough virtual
memory space allocated. you can
see the amount via system control
panel, system, advanced, performance.

d) are there too many or useless
programs prestarting? you can
see them by running msconfig via
the run command.

e) do you have any hardware
conflicts or problems? you can
see them by running msinfo32 via
the run command.

Ok I opened up the system configuration utility and started my computer up in
diagnostic mode and it is much faster now. However, none of my devices are
working. For instance when i opened itunes, i couldn't play a song because it
says i have no sound device. I cannot connect to the internet either. I tried
going back to normal startup and it was still working fast but I still
couldn't do any of these things. It also seemed to have lost the windows xp
settings - like the appearance and everything.
