Computer is having a seizure

A

Austin Powers

I am currently running Windows XP Pro at home with the latest patches
and service packs. I run Adware and Spybot on regular basis and keep
my Norton A/V up to date.

BUT... I am having a bizarre problem. When I try to install new
hardware... even a mouse.. or when trying to isntall updates from
Microsoft's Windows Update... it pops up a message for various
hardware items... Keyboard, Mouse, HdC, Volume,
etc.

The message is basically a variation of the following:

Window Title: Device Installer Error

Windows could not load the installer for Keyboard. Contact your
hardware vendor for assistance.

Anyone have any clues? I have to click ok about 14 times to install
an update and it's getting annoying!

Thanks!

Make sure the Plug and Play service is running.
Start > Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Services >
Plug and Play service.
If the problem persists run SFC: Start > Run...
"sfc /scannow". You will need to insert your Windows XP
Pro installation disc to complete this task.
