computer hangs on shutting it down

When I shut de computer down, all goes well, except that he stays hanging on
the last window : settings are being saved. Then nothing happens any more. I
have to shut it down manually with a knob at the back of the computer. I have
tried to shut down all user processes before shutting it down from startmenu,
but with no result. Is there anything I can do ?
