Hi,

I run windows xp pro with SP1, and all updates. The keyboard and mouse
are Microsoft Wireless Elite.

When I boot up all goes well until the window where I have to enter the
password. The mouse works OK and the cursor is blinking.

But as soon as I press a key on the keyboard, the computer freezes up.

Pressing the Reset Button on the computer case restarts everything, but
this time I can enter the password and the boot process proceeds
normally. There is no other defect in the computer.

Will you please tell me why this happens and how to correct it.

Thank you.

Al.

Hi Al,

Could it be that the second time the computer started in Safe Mode? If
so, when everthing works in Safe Mode you could consider updating
drivers for your keyboard.

Hope that helps,

Have you tried a wired keyboard to see what happens?
Try safe mode and see what happens.

Try changing the channels that the Mouse & Keyboard operate
from. Do you have any other "Wireless" components that might
be competing for the same channel ?
As a test, when BIOS posts (Power on Self-Test) the keyboard
should initialize and you'll see the Key lock or Num Lock LED's
flash to indicate the Keyboard is active. Check to see if this
happens. If not then it probably is a channel conflict.
