Computer forgot it has a CD Burner

Hi. I've tried everything. Hope someone can help...

Here is the scoop:

Last... thursday? (approx) I bought an album from iTunes
and burned a CD with it in iTunes. This is the last time
I burned a CD successfully. After realizing my computer
wasn't cooperating, I performed a System Restore to a
point far before I burned my last CD. No dice. I had
since realized that Sonic Recordnow wasn't working - if I
click on the icon or any of its shortcuts it simply
yields a rather small blank window with a red x and
the "OK" button. That's all that happens... Now, after
restoring to something like last January to no avail, I
went into the system services. the imapi was disabled
and i enabled it, set it to auto-on. (must note: I have
no idea why it was disabled, but it is now working.) i
went into the properties of the drive and the "recording"
tab is no longer there, only General, Hardware, Sharing
and AutoPlay (and at this point, DLA) I have tried
disabling the sonic DLA, enabling it again, and doing the
whole shebang... no luck. decided to try something and
successfully formatted and used rainier-style a cd-rw
disc. works on other drive and all.... so confusing.
so, now, i have this:

-drive that does not recognize blank discs at all, has no
recording tab.
-imapi working
-no more sonic DLA
-sonic record now that does not work.
pretty much my computer thinks it has no cd burner.
which is problematic.

sorry i'm so bad at describing the problem but i really
dont even understand it so... if anyone has any
suggestions... someone told me it sounds like an os
problem and i should boot from disc and repair but i'm
not sure how to get my computer to boot from disc. so,
if anyone could help...

if anyone is really experienced with this sort of thing
wants to hook up for some remote assistance, i would be
eternally grateful.

btw- this is cross-posted from a quite dead dell.com
forum; my computer is a dimension 4600 w/ 2.8ghz, 612 mb
ram, 120 gb hd, NEC DVD+RW ND 2100 8x dvd writing... if
theres any more info needed let me know.. i'm desperate
to know what is wrong or how this can be fixed.

thanks again,

tim

note: it's me again.

just went into the registry as the knowledge base
recommended and checked the setting for teh drive.. yes,
it, according to the registry, is a CD-R drive (setting
2). but... it still has no "recording" menu in the
drive properties... grar.

hope someone can help..
