Computer drops a hard drive

Running XP Pro with 2 gb ram and an intel D945 GCNL motherboard Bios
NL94510J.86i.0005.2008.0829.1419 Primary drive is an IDE and second is SATA.
The second HD is used for storage only, mainly photos, but often when it is
in use it disappears from the system. Have to reboot and then get message
Drive D has inconsistencies and needs checking. HAve formatted drive, even
bought a new one but nothing works. It keeps happening. Getting ready to toss
this machine!!!!!!!!!!!!

And how is your external connected to this PC?
Perhaps its not receiving sufficient power?

Save all the files off the SATA drive.

Then, locate the drive manufacturer's diagnostic tools (from the web
site) and test this drive.

You said that you bought another hard drive. Did you connect it to the same
controller as the "faulty" hard drive? If that's the case I would suspect a
faulty controller, not hard drive.
