"Losing" secondary hard drive

AK

Computer has 2 HD, the primary is an IDE and secondary is SATA. Motherboard
is Intel D945 GCNL, Bios flashed to latest version. Secondary drive is mainly
for storing Photograhs but it frequently disappears. On reboot I get the
message one of the drives needs to be checked for consistency. This done the
system reboots and works normally for a short time then it happens again,
usually when trying to download to drive. The Disk itself is new and has been
properly formatted.

Are there any Error messages in the system log in Event Viewer? This
type of error can get reported if it occurs after the boot has completed
but if it occurs during the boot process it can be occurring before
Event Logging starts.

Try another sata cable. This is worthwhile if you did not use a new
cable when you installed the drive or there are certain reports in Event
Viewer.

Have you taken the precaution of backing up your photographs to
removable media whilst you can? If you have then have you tried running
chkdsk? Do not run chkdsk if you have not backed up!

Have a look in the System and Application logs in Event Viewer for
Errors and Warnings and post copies here. Don't post any more than 48
hours ago.

You can access Event Viewer by selecting Start, Control Panel,
Administrative Tools, and Event Viewer. When researching the meaning
of the error, information regarding Event ID, Source and Description
are important.

HOW TO: View and Manage Event Logs in Event Viewer in Windows XP

A tip for posting copies of Error Reports! Run Event Viewer and double
click on the error you want to copy. In the window, which appears is a
button resembling two pages. Click the button and close Event
Viewer. Now start your message (email) and do a paste into the body of
the message. Make sure this is the first paste after exiting from
Event Viewer.

First try swapping out the SATA cable. It sounds like there's a loose
connection and/or a bad cable.
