computer doesn't detect USB items

I have a USB mass storage device and a digital camera (with usb plug) that
doesn't get detected on my Windows XP Pro computer when i plug and play.
Both devices says no driver necessary for XP computers and even when I did
install the drivers, nothing changed and computer still couldn't detect. I
have installed all the latest USB drivers for SP1. (Both of these devices
work on my brother's XP pro computer plug and play). So I was wondering if
there's any registry that i need to modify.

p.s. if this is any help, this computer is custom made (by me) with asus
mobo P4P800 and intel pentinum 4.

p.p.s. the devices work only when i have them plug into the slot before I
turn on the computer.

thx ahead for any1 that can give help.

What is the status of the USB devices in device manager and does it need
specific drivers that came with the motherboard. (usually on the CD)

there is no status of the usb devices
and none of the devices need drivers.

the usb 2.0 driver is not necessary for the mobo since the windows xp
service pack 1 includes the drivers.

The "universal serial bus controllers" are normally listed at the bottom, I
assume you can see them but windows reports they are working correctly.
Although XP does have support for USB 1 & 2 you sometimes need drivers
specific for the motherboard you are using. (it's worth checking) other than
that you could uninstall the current drivers and let windows re-detect the
devices.

all the best
