Computer does not recognize printer attached to another computer

[Guest]

In trying to setup a printer on MOM's computer within the workgroup (MSHOME),
the computer does not see the printer that's attached to DAD's computer. The
structure shows this:
- Microsoft Network Group
- DAD
- MOM
I'm expecting to see a printer under DAD that I could use, but there's no
printer name. Could anyone shed some solution?

Are these both Windows XP?

if MOM can see both DAD and MOM in Network Places, you already did the hard
part. The printer should be listed in a Printers and Faxes folder in the DAD
folder. It is not?

On DAD, open Printers and Faxes, right-click on the printer and choose
Properties. What does it say on the Sharing page?

both machines and test it again. If it still fails, move on to the next
step. If it succeeds, take note of which step fixed it for the benefit of

1. Make sure that sharing is on, on DAD. The easiest way to do this is to
use the Network Connection Wizard in All Programs > Accessories >
Communication.
2. Make sure that sharing is on, on MOM.
3. You may need to enable the Guest account on DAD, if there are accounts
with no password protection. You can do this using Start > Control Panel >
User Accounts > User Accounts. Was it already enabled or disabled?
4. You may need to enable the Guest account on MOM. Was it already enabled
or disabled?

If it still does not work, which firewall, antivirus or antispyware software
do you have, and do you have any hardware that could be interfering, eg. a
router?

Johnnie, is it even showing you the Printers and Faxes folder? If not, the
problem could merely be that this shell extension became unregistered and
you can try adding it a different way. You can use the Add Printer Wizard
and browse for a network printer.

A colleague of mine was convinced that Windows XP Home Edition does not have
permissions, by which he meant file and folder DACLs. He came to this belief
because they are not visible in the UI, as you say. For the benefits of
those with the same misconception - yes, it does have DACLs. As I
discovered, you can view them with the SUBINACL Platform SDK tool.

Yes, I can see the Printers and Faxes folder in MOM's, under Control Panel.
And yes, I've been trying to use the Add Printer wizard which allows you to
see the printer that's available in the network, but to no avail. I see DAD

tab.

Control Panel, Network Connections, Advanced (up on the top menu bar),
Advanced Settings, Provider order
LanMan Print Services should be the first in the list

Actually, I think it should show all shared printers in My Network
Places\...\DAD, regardless of permission.

The Printers and Faxes folder is for remote administration of locally
installed printers, I think.

Is the remote printers folder visible on DAD? If not then the RPC endpoint
is not open to the remote clients.

This setting is supposed to be enabled (and the proper firewall ports
opened) when one shares a printer.

launch gpedit.msc on DAD

Enable
Allow Print Spooler to accept client connections

stop and start the spooler service or reboot.

launched gpedit.msc on DAD, enabled allow print spooler to accept client
connections. went to MOM, added printer, still the printer is not visible.

Is the remote printers folder visible on DAD? If not then the RPC endpoint
is not open to the remote clients.

This setting is supposed to be enabled (and the proper firewall ports

2. I enabled the Guest accounts on both.
3. Still does not work, I have Symantec firewall and antivirus, but

firewall allows file and print sharing.

There are a few things you can try, which I list in order.

I would proceed as follows. After each change, test it. If it
fails,
reboot
both machines and test it again. If it still fails, move on to the
next
step. If it succeeds, take note of which step fixed it for the
benefit
of
others that may be in a similar situation.

1. Make sure that sharing is on, on DAD. The easiest way to do this
is
to
use the Network Connection Wizard in All Programs > Accessories >
Communication.
2. Make sure that sharing is on, on MOM.
3. You may need to enable the Guest account on DAD, if there are
accounts
with no password protection. You can do this using Start > Control
Panel

User Accounts > User Accounts. Was it already enabled or disabled?
4. You may need to enable the Guest account on MOM. Was it already
enabled
or disabled?

If it still does not work, which firewall, antivirus or antispyware
software
do you have, and do you have any hardware that could be
interfering,
eg.
a
router?

folder

DAD
folder. It is not?

On DAD, open Printers and Faxes, right-click on the printer and

Properties. What does it say on the Sharing page?

launched gpedit.msc on DAD, enabled allow print spooler to accept client
connections. went to MOM, added printer, still the printer is not
visible.

Is the remote printers folder visible on DAD? If not then the RPC
endpoint
is not open to the remote clients.

This setting is supposed to be enabled (and the proper firewall ports
opened) when one shares a printer.

launch gpedit.msc on DAD

Computer, Administrative Templates, Printers
Enable
Allow Print Spooler to accept client connections

stop and start the spooler service or reboot.

Alan, I mentioned this in my list of suggested steps on 2/5. Johnnie, I
looked over your answer again and you said that sharing was on on both
computers, but you did not say how you determined that. The Network
Connection Wizard, which I think is what Alan is referring to, does more
than just simply turn sharing on or off. For example, it adds a File and
Printer Sharing exception to the Windows Firewall configuration. In any
case, this has helped me in the past with these kinds of problems.

Again, one way to get to it is via All Programs > Accessories >
Communication.

This was the very first thing I did when I thought of MOM being able to use
DAD's printer. I tried network connection 3 ways - using the XP cd, going to
control panel>network setup wizard and also going to all
programs>accessories>communications>network setup wizard
