Computer crashing when connecting to the Internet

I have Windows XP Home Edition installed at home and every
time I start my computer and double click on IE6 the
connection to the Internet comes up and starts to connect
automatically. Before it dials my computer crashes. When
I re-start my computer its fine. Any ideas on why its
crashing. Im using 56k

It could be that the modem is sharing an IRQ with another device (check in
control panel/system/hadware information against each device listed and note
IRQ number) and XP isn't handling it too well hence the crash as soon as the
modem is required. Try moving the modem to a different PCI slot on the
motherboard.
