Computer applications, saves, and downloads freeze

I just recently reformatted my computer. Its been about 2-3 weeks since I did
that. For some reason after those 2-3 weeks after a period of time whenever I
was installing or saving or downloading they would freeze and I wouldn't be
able to access task manager either. I ran a virus check and ad and spyware
check and that didn't help. Im running windows xp. Anyone encounter a similar
problem?

As a start after formatting did you install mobo chipset and other drivers
from manu sites/cd's and not winupdate?
